The +100kg category has its strong man, Inal Tasoev. Once again he was crowned with the gold medals. It suits his red world champion back patch. At the Grand Slam in Baky he managed to escape all the traps that stood in his way. The most dangerous was undoubtedly Gela Zaalishvili in the semi-final who knocked him off balance several times without scoring, before Tasoev finally found the solution a few seconds from the end with a timely waza-ari to enter a new final.
On the last day of the Asian Games Judo Tournament held in Hangzhou, The Men's U90kg category delivered a thrilling showdown with winner Erlan Sherov from Kyrgyzstan who secured the gold medal. In the final he bested Davlat Bobonov from Uzbekistan, who took silver. The bronze in this category went to Aram Grigorian from the United Arab Emirates and Caramnob Sagaipov from Lebanon.
Today was the comeback of double world champion Sarah Asahina, who saw Akira Sone (JPN) take the lead in Japan in recent years. Starting well in the competition without being seeded, she faced Beatriz Souza (BRA) in the semi-final and had to bow out to eventually be qualified for the bronze medal contest.
Although he is already world number one, Ilia Sulamanidze (GEO) is only 22 years old and has his whole life ahead of him. He owes this world number one position to constantly improving results, even if the big senior consecration is still to come. The obvious seed here in Baku, he had a place to hold and he did it magnificently by qualifying for the final.
The final four of the Grand Slam in Baku saw Mami Umeki (JPN) and Anna-Maria Wagner (GER) face off at the top of the table, while Alice Bellandi (ITA) and Mayra Aguiar (BRA) did so at the bottom of the draw. Eventually it was Wagner and Bellandi who overcome their opponents to reach the final.
Mikhail Igolnikov (AIN) has won the Grand Slam in Baku. The winner in Ulaanbaatar last June, started with a bye, followed by victories against Theodoros Tselidis (GRE) and Thomas Scharfetter (AUT), before defeating Mihael Zgank (TUR) in the semi-final. In the final he was opposed to Ivaylo Ivanov.
